Kastav’s roots go deep — back to prehistoric Paleolithic settlements and Illyrian tribes like the Japodes. Archaeological finds, including an Illyrian necropolis in the Mišinci valley, testify to its ancient heritage.

The medieval town was heavily fortified, surrounded by walls with nine towers; remnants like the Kaštel, Volta gate, municipal Loggia, and Lokvina Square still stand.

The Kastav Code (circa 1400) and the later Kastav Statute (preserved in Latin) reflect the town’s medieval administrative importance

Kastav was a cultural and political center, enduring various rulers—from the Romans and Ostrogoths to Napoleonic and Habsburg administrations—yet preserving its identity.
